Removals to Essex – Writtle

Removals to Essex – Writtle

Writtle has been described as one of the loveliest villages in England; it comes complete with duck pond and traditional village green but is also home to one of the UK’s leading universities and also one of the most well-known pop festivals.

Greens is a leading Chelmsford removal company, so Writtle is right on our doorstep – less than three miles away. Here is our guide to the village of Writtle, a place with several claims to fame.

History
There is early evidence of a Roman settlement in Writtle. It was also mentioned in the Domesday book. Some claim that Robert the Bruce, the famous Scottish warrior, was born here, but this has never been conclusively proved; all that is definitely known is that he was a member of the de Brus family who lived on the village estate.

A more definite claim to fame is that Writtle was the site of the first British radio station, 2MT, with transmissions beginning in 1922. The Marconi factory was based in nearby Chelmsford and the presenter Captain Eckersley’s famous regular announcement was "This is Two Emma Toc, Writtle testing, Writtle testing". The prefabricated hut from which the first broadcast was made is now at the nearby Sandford Mill museum.

Transport Links
Writtle has excellent transport links with the rest of the county. It is just off the A414, which runs towards Hertfordshire, and the M11 links the village with the west of the county. The A12 links the village with Chelmsford and London and also the M25.

There are regular bus services to Chelmsford, Epping and Ongar from Writtle and nearby Chelmsford’s railway station has frequent service to London Liverpool Street, being on the Great Eastern Main Line.

Main Attractions
Hylands Park is in the parish of Writtle and has more than 500 acres of parkland beautifully maintained by Chelmsford City Council. The sprawling park includes lawns, paths and a pleasure garden.

Hylands Park is also famous for the annual pop concert previously known as the V Festival, now called RIZE. This has attracted some of the biggest names in the music business, including Kings of Leon and Florence and The Machine.

Hylands House, also run by the city council, has recently undergone a period of extensive restoration and is available for weddings, celebrations, business events and is open to the public on selected days.  The original Hylands House dates back to the 1730s.

Community Focus
The historic All Saints Church sits just off Writtle Green and is surrounded by a graveyard and a well-kept garden lined with yew trees. The main part of the church dates from the 12th century but has been frequently added to and altered since then. In 1974 a fire badly damaged the church’s roof and a large cross was made from the burnt timbers. This cross still stands in the churchyard today.

The community village hall in the centre of the village sits next to a duck pond and is home to various art groups, sports clubs and many other local organisations.

Education
Writtle University College, previously Writtle College, is one of the largest land-based university colleges in the UK. It previously specialised in agriculture and horticulture, in which it is still a world-leader, but has now diversified to meet changing demand. Writtle University College offers FE and HE courses in other areas, including bioveterinary science and art and design.

Writtle is extremely well served for schools; it has thriving Infant and Junior Schools, and also a pre-school in Writtle Green.

Shops & Businesses
Even though it is a village, with a population of just over 5,000 people, Writtle is extremely well served for shops, services and amenities. It has the basics including a post office, a tea room, a greengrocer, a florist and a fish and chip shop. It also has plenty of more specialist companies, including builders, decorators and estate agents.

The well-known pubs, The Rose and Crown and The Wheatsheaf, are both to be found on Writtle Green, while The Chequers is appropriately on Chequers Road.
