Removals to Johannesburg, South Africa: Living in Johannesburg

Known by locals as Jozi or Jo'burg, it is a bustling city with soaring sky scrapers and is the leading financial and economic centre of South Africa.

It is the country's largest and most populated city and its airport, Tambo International, is the busiest on the African continent with an incredible 18 million passengers a year pasasing through its gates.

Johannesburg has a fascinating history and, in the 1880's, gold was discovered here which prompted the Gold Rush. Indeed, the city is known as 'the place of gold' as 40 per cent of the world's gold is found in this region. It is also an important centre for the diamond trade.

However, this was not always the face of Johannesburg. It was once a tented camp, then it became a city of tin shanties. It has been rebuilt over a century into the global city it is now and it is among the top forty largest metropolitan cities in the world.

Although there are some very poor areas of Johannesburg, the city also has some very wealthy parts too, as well as many areas in between. Johannesburg is the capital of Gauteng, the richest province in the country.

In addition to its buildings, the city has a number of nature reserves and other open spaces. It has in the region of 10 million trees, which is why it has been dubbed the largest man made forest in the world.

Removals to Johannesburg, South Africa; Places to Visit

Johannesburg is not only a leading financial centre, but it is also a cultural centre too with many places to visit. It has a total of 150 heritage sites and 50 per cent of these are national monuments.

If you like theatre, World Renowned Market Theatre in Newtown is well worth a visit and has great live shows.

South Africa is also known for its beer and the South Africa Breweries World of Beer plays host to nearly 50,000 visitors a year. Take a tour and discover how the beer has changed through the ages.

To find out more about the city's history and the changes in South Africa over the years, it is well worth visiting the Apartheid Museum, which is the first of its type and conveys the rise and fall of Apartheid.

Removals to Johannesburg, South Africa: Accommodation for Expats

Many people move to Johannesburg to enjoy a higher standard of living and there is certainly this to be had if you are moving to one of the more affluent and attractive gated suburbs.

The houses for expats are generally big in South Africa and many are available with swimming pools. There is a good availability of domestic help and many homes can accommodate staff. However, if you want to live closer to work (traffic can be a nightmare!) some people choose to live in an apartment instead.

If you are relocating for work reasons and do not intend to relocate to South Africa permanently, you may prefer to rent a property and this will involve leasing direct from the landlord. The cost of renting can vary from £375 to £4,500 a month and there will be an additional charge on most estates for security and maintenance. For those who want to buy, house prices can vary from £52,212 upwards to £750,000 and above.

Crime in South Africa is higher than in most other places and, for this reason, gated communities are considered as the most secured properties in South Africa. These have armed guards, high walls and CCTV.

Moving to Johannesburg: Out and About in Johannesburg

As in all new countries, a move to Johannesburg takes some getting used to - the traffic for one thing. Johannesburg has the most number of motorways and highways than anywhere in South Africa so it is easy to get lost by car. Just make sure that you use Sat-Nav and plan your route in advance.

Public transport is almost non-existent in Johannesburg so most people rely on their cars to get out; but plan your route carefully and don't leave valuables or belongings in your car.

There are buses and a Metrobus but this is often unreliable and can be confusing to work out.
