Removals to Essex – Coggeshall

Coggeshall is one of the most attractive places in Essex to move to. It lies midway between Colchester and Braintree, is less than 20 miles from the county town of Chelmsford, and the coast is also within easy reach.
Greens Removals offers a professional removals service to Chelmsford, Colchester, Braintree, Clacton and all other towns and villages in Essex, including Coggeshall. Here is our guide to one of the most historic towns in the county.

Coggeshall's Heritage

The origin of Coggeshall’s name has been the subject of much debate over the years. Some believe it is Roman in origin, others Celtic, and yet more believe it dates from Saxon times. What is beyond argument is the fact that the town owed its initial growth to the textile industry. Initially the wool trade was a major employer, but as laws and tastes changed, this was succeeded by cloth, silk, velvet and lace.

Transport

Coggeshall lies on the site of the ancient Roman road of Stane Street, which has now been replaced by the A120. It follows the same route all the way to Colchester, although it bypasses Coggeshall itself. The A12 to London is also easily accessible.

The town benefits from excellent transport links with the rest of the county and the capital. There are regular daily buses to both Chelmsford and Colchester and there is also a community service to nearby Kelvedon. Rail travellers can catch regular Greater Anglia services to London Liverpool Street from either Colchester or Chelmsford.

Education

The town has schools for all age groups. Coggeshall Montessori, which opened in 1999, is an independent school which cares for children up to the age of 11, and has nursery and toddler classes.
Of the state schools, St Peter’s C of E Primary is set in spacious grounds in Myneer Park and enjoys close links with the parish church of St Peter ad Vincula.  Honywood Community Science School, on Westfield Drive, was previously known as Honywood School when it opened in 1964. In 2006 it added six new science classrooms, thanks to a special system of grants and aid from local businesses. In 2011 it became an academy.

Attraction

You won’t have to look far to find evidence of Coggeshall’s rich history. It has two properties owned by the National Trust. Paycocke’s House is named after butchers who moved to the town in the 15th century and whose sheep provided meat for the residents and wool for the textile industry. The house boasts some fine wood carvings and panelling.

Grange Barn dates back to the 13th century and is one of Europe’s oldest timber framed buildings still standing. Originally built by Cistercian monks, these days it houses a fine display of farm equipment and is still available for hire.

The monks were based at Coggeshall Abbey, which was built in the 12th century. Parts of the original building, notably its superb brickwork, still survive today. it is open to the public on certain days of the year or by prior arrangement. People interested in the town’s history can also visit the Coggeshall Museum and History Centre at the Village Hall in Stoneham Street.  The town’s past is also reflected in the sign on the green, which depicts a monk and a wool merchant, and the striking blue and white painted clock tower on Market Hill which was built to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign.

Shopping

The town has a supermarket, post office, pharmacy and garden centre, plus a wide range of independent shops if you are looking for a more individual purchase. The weekly market runs every Thursday in Stoneham Street, and there is also a monthly farmers’ market in the village hall.

Sport

Coggeshall Town FC, which was founded in 1878, is one of the oldest football clubs in Essex. Their nickname, The Seedmen, is believed to refer to the club’s founders, JK King and Sons, a seed company which was then based in the town. Their most famous player and supporter is former X Factor singing star Olly Murs.

Coggeshall also has a thriving cricket club, with five senior teams, and junior teams from U11 to U15. Like the town’s football club, it has been operating for well over 100 years and has a flourishing social scene too.
