Removals to Essex – Great Tey

Great Tey is one of the hidden gems of Essex – with a population of around 1,000, its community spirit saw it ranked in the top six places to live in the county’s Village of the Year contest. Chelmsford removal company Greens can organise commercial and domestic moves to all parts of the county and across the UK. Here we take a closer look at the village.

Transport Links
Great Tey is around six miles west of Colchester, and less than four miles north-west of its neighbour, Marks Tey. The A12 and the A120 provide excellent links with London and the rest of Essex.

There are frequent rail services from Colchester to the capital, and Marks Tey also has a station on the Great Eastern main line. Buses on the Colne Engaine and Wakes Colne to Colchester routes also stop in the village.

Village Facilities

The School – Great Tey Primary School has around 50 pupils aged from four to 11, with youngsters starting their education in the reception class. The recreation ground next to the school allows villagers to play a variety of sports, including tennis, basketball and football.

The Village Hall – This was originally built in 1926 but has since been modernised and refurbished. It now has a main hall which can accommodate more than 100 people for seated events, a fully equipped kitchen and its own car park.

Community groups who use it include Cubs, Scouts and Beavers, sports clubs including karate and table tennis, and the local branch of the Women’s Institute. The hall is also the venue for a twice-weekly Post Office outreach service, and the nearest GP practice, in Earls Colne, also holds monthly surgeries at here.

The Parish Church – Much of St Barnabas’ Church dates from around 1150 – the Norman period - making it one of the oldest parish churches in the county. Its notable features include the imposing central tower, the 15th century octagonal font, and the striking east and north transept windows.

Services are sometimes held in the neighbouring parish church of St James the Less in Little Tey. However, St Barnabas’ Church also hosts a number of concerts and is the home venue for several community groups, including pre-school playgroups and the Mother’s Union.

Shops and Businesses – The Chequers Pub is another village social hub, with the original building dating from the 16th century. A number of agri-businesses are located at the Great Tey business centre, at Warrens Farm.
