Amsterdam

Rotterdam

Rotterdam has the largest port in Europe which was the world’s busiest between 1962 and 2004. It also has good road, rail, air and inland waterway links which earned its name the gateway to Europe.

It is a bustling multi-cultural city which, together with Porto, was the European Capital of Culture in 2001. The city is also known for its excellent nightlife and cutting edge architecture including the cube houses, built in 1984. It is home to the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and among its attractions are the Maritime Museum and the Netherlands Architecture Institute.

Rotterdam has a population of more than 600,000 and the city is divided north to south by the River Nieuwe Maas.

The Hague

The Hague is the judicial capital of the world with many international courts based here including the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice. It is also the seat of the Dutch government and the Royal family; Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands lives at Huis ten Bosch. More than 150 international organisations are based here as well, along withseveral multi-national companies

The city has a population of half a million and is situated in the province of South Holland. It is the third largest city after Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

Maastricht

Maastricht is a pretty fortified medieval city with winding streets and two town squares including Vrijthof, with St Servaas Church and St Jans Cathedral, and the Markt, which has the town hall and markets. It claims to be the oldest city in the Netherlands along with Nijmegen. It is a multi-cultural city and popular tourist destination with a natural history museum, ceramic centre and Bonnefantenmuseum among its many attractions.

Nearly 200,000 people live in Maastricht which is within walking distance of Belgium and just a bike ride away from Germany.

Delft

This is an attractive unspoilt historic town which is more than 750 years old and it is known for its blue and white ceramics (Delftware). It has many canals, traditional architecture, a university and many people get round and about by bike as the land here is flat and there are designated cycle paths everywhere.

The city is a centre for art and science and among the attractions include the Science Centre Delft (used to be the technology museum), Royal Delft Factory, New Church, Old Church, Windmill and Botanical Garden.

Leiden

This is a beautiful historic city which houses the country’s oldest universities and has a large student population. Einstein spent some time at the university here and Rembrandt was born in the city.

Leiden has the second largest 17th century town centre in the Netherlands and numerous canals, churches as well as three national museums - the Museum of Antiquities, the Museum of Ethnology and the Natural History Museum.

It has a population of 120,000 and is situated on the Old Rhine, South Holland, and 40 km from Amsterdam to the north.

Nijmegen

Reportedly the oldest city in the Netherlands, Nijmegen celebrated its 2000th year in 2005. It counts the Museum of African Art and Culture, The House of Nijmegen History, Museum Park Orientalis, the Bicycle Museum and the Museum of Roman and Medieval History and Modern Art among its many attractions.

Nijmegen has a large student population and is known for its marches and left wing politics. It is situated in the east of the Netherlands, near the German border and has a population of 165,000.

Utrecht

This Netherlands city has an ancient city centre with many buildings dating from the early part of the middle ages. Utrecht is a cultural city with several theatre companies, art galleries and museums. It plans to become the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2018. The city also has the largest university in the country

Utrecht is in the central part of the county and is the fourth largest city of the Netherlands with a population of 315,000.The most important Dutch Roman Catholic leader, the Archbishop of Utrecht, is based here.
